Janome ThreadBanger TB30Funky, cool graphics and light up buttons? I’m in! The Janome ThreadBanger TB30 is a work horse that also knows how to let its hair down.

Doesn’t it look like there’s a party happening on that machine?

I realize how the machine looks is not a significant factor when choosing your first sewing machine, but after looking at quite a number of very plain, very white sewing machines for beginners, it’s really hard not to be drawn in by the great colors on this one.

Brother Computerized Sewing MachinesIf you’re thinking of buying a sewing machine for the first time, the choices available can be rather daunting.

There are many computerized sewing machines for beginners which offer different features, so there are certain things you should decide before you go ahead and buy.

The first thing to remember is that, as a beginner, you don’t need to go for the most expensive and complicated machine on the market (unless you have big plans!).

Singer Confidence 7470 Sewing MachineFor sewing beginners interested in quilting and a solid starter machine  (or are simply addicted to decorative stitches), the Singer Confidence 7470 is worth a look. It’s also a hit with more experienced sewers replacing an older Singer machine.

Its foundation is a heavy-duty metal frame (although, don’t expect the Singer style of years gone by – there are still some plastic parts and accessories) and described by Singer as an “electronic sewing machine which will be appreciated by experienced and novice sewers alike”.

Janome Magnolia 7330 Sewing MachineThe Janome 7330 Magnolia is one of the least finicky machines for beginners (so say other users!).

It is the top of the line in the series and as I read over the features and functionality, I knew I’d just seen nearly identical performance in another machine review – the Janome AQS 2009.

Both machines are great for quilters, beginner or experienced, but whereas the AQS was built for portability, this one is a full size sewing machine.

Presser Foot Overview

Presser FootBeginners can use this presser foot overview to determine which feet would be most useful on a new sewing machine. Within each review we describe the particular feet that come with each of the machines but on our compare page we note only the number included. The number may be far less important than their purpose and how they help you sew better and faster.

The job of the presser foot is to hold the fabric down as the feed dogs push the fabric along from below. The most common of these is the general purpose presser foot which comes on nearly every basic sewing machine. Other than a walking foot, presser feet do not move during sewing, they simply apply pressure so the feed dogs can make contact with the material.

Even a basic, starter sewing machine can be used to accomplish some free motion embroidery sewing. This video tutorial shows you how.

There are a few very simple requirements you’d need of your machine but we’ll explain what those are, how to get started and show you one very, inspiring video.

Have you ever seen a little girl’s dress collar embossed with a scallop stitch in a contrasting color, flowers stitched haphazardly as if dancing at the hem of a skirt, or a special emblem stitched onto a shirt pocket?
